Massive use of antibiotics has
led to the emergence of resistant
bacteria that undermine the
efficacy of these drugs. Thanks
to research, we now know that
building up the microbiota during
the early years of life is crucial
to a healthy immune system and
the potential development of
antibiotic resistance. A pioneer
in this field, Søren Johannes
Sørensen was awarded by the
Biocodex Microbiota Foundation
international grant in 2022 which
focused on this topic.

AWARD-WINNING
RESEARCH
The work carried out by Søren Johannes Sørensen’s
team, which won the Foundation’s research grant,
aims to help us understand how antibiotic resistance
comes about, and to identify the environmental
factors that influence its onset from early childhood.
HOW?
By analyzing the microbiota of 700 children at
different stages of their growth: at ages 1 week,
1 month, 1 year and 10 years.
