Set up in May 2021 by the Biocodex Microbiota

Foundation, this award recognizes gut

microbiota programs that are likely to have

a significant impact on the health of local

populations.

Which projects are eligible?

Examples include promoting good nutritional

practices, wastewater purification, and

campaigns aimed at reducing child mortality

due to infectious diarrhea.

The independent jury is composed of

Caroline Lachowski, science journalist at

RFI and producer of the show “Autour de la

question”, and Patrick De Boever,

from Hasselt University (Belgium).

THE AIM

Reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and high-

risk abortions in Nigeria, explain the risks of improper use

of antibiotics, and avoid dysbiosis of the gut microbiota

and antibiotic resistance.

THE PROBLEM

In Nigeria, taking high doses of an antibiotic called Am-

piclox is mistakenly believed to be an effective method of

contraception. However, repeatedly taking unnecessary

antibiotics can lead to dysbiosis and favor anti-microbial

resistance (AMR), as well as unwanted pregnancies.
